Be part of something that matters.
At Age UK Gloucestershire, we understand the difference volunteering can make and truly appreciate the positive impact it has. We offer a wide range of volunteer roles, giving you the opportunity to use your individual skills and experience to enhance the lives of older people and help people to age well, their way. Whether you can offer just a few hours a week or more, we’d love to hear from you. From group activities to one‑to‑one support, we can work with you to find the right role for you. You’ll be supported throughout your journey with us, with training and guidance from our dedicated team.
In honour of Volunteers' Week (1st - 7th June), we're celebrating our incredible volunteers and the meaningful contributions they make. We believe our volunteers are best placed to share what it’s really like, so here’s what they say about being part of our organisation, in their own words:
Ann, Information Hub Volunteer
"I began volunteering during a personally challenging time, seeking meaningful interaction and connection. Following my training, it became clear that Age UK Gloucestershire offers a wide range of valuable support services, many of which are not widely known to the public.
My volunteer role in the Atrium at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital (GRH) involves public engagement, offering guidance, and signposting. Many individuals initially approached casually, but gradually led to deeper discussions about personal challenges. A recurring theme was that people were unsure whether they were “eligible” for help, and this hesitation often prevented them from seeking support earlier. Many people appeared relieved simply to have someone approachable to talk to; reinforcing the value of a visible, informal support presence within a hospital setting.
This role not only supported members of the public but also provided me with a sense of purpose and connection during a difficult period in my life. It reinforced the importance of community-based support and the vital role Age UK Gloucestershire plays in improving people’s wellbeing."
Isaac, Previous Information Hub Volunteer
"I've found that volunteering has really helped me to improve my interpersonal skills, and given me the confidence to look for more customer-facing work, as well as just giving me lots of examples of how friendly I can be in interviews. Volunteering has also helped me to improve my confidence in interpersonal settings when talking to other people."
We are delighted that Isaac has gone on to secure paid employment, following his volunteering experience with Age UK Gloucestershire.
Helen, Trustee and Information Hub Volunteer
"I really enjoy meeting and chatting to people. Sadly, some are struggling, sad or lonely, and it’s rewarding to help with suggestions, or refer them to our own Help Team for support. Sometimes, just listening is all that’s needed.
As a Trustee, I enjoy being part of shaping the organisation and working with a group of very experienced fellow Trustees and colleagues who are equally passionate about Ageing Well."
John, Help Team Volunteer
"Attendance Allowance application forms are long and complex, which often puts older people off applying altogether. Being able to help someone complete the form properly and knowing they have a strong chance of successfully receiving the benefit they’re entitled to, can make a real difference to their quality of life. Volunteering in this way is incredibly rewarding and gives me a real sense of wellbeing.
I love meeting people. Everyone is always so grateful that someone has taken the time to visit them in their own home and offer this support. Each visit is special, and every person has a fascinating life story to share, which naturally comes out during our time together."
Lois, Ageing Without Children Social Group Volunteer
"I started volunteering years ago for various organisations, firstly in Norwich and later in Cheltenham. Volunteering matters to me because I’m a people person; I love socialising and I love encouraging others. It has a fun element of meeting lots of people, and I have gained many customer service skills. It also helps me plan my daily and weekly routine.
Age UK Gloucestershire has supported me with online training, taken active interest in me as a volunteer, and I have made connections with the staff. I feel proud to be part of the Age UK Gloucestershire volunteering family."
