Planning Granted for extension at Age UK Herne Bay & Whitstable

Published on 02 January 2019 09:38 PM

Permission has been granted to extend the Age UK Centre at Herne Bay.

To support the increasing needs of local older people in Herne Bay and Whitstable, Clague proposed a two-storey timber and zinc clad addition to the Age UK centre, with large windows and central light wells the works will create a fresh interior environment to suit the needs of Age UK and their guests and exciting new external facade.

The approved extension will provide additional day care facilities and further office accommodation for rent to local charities and community groups, the revenue from which contributes to support the running of Age UK Herne Bay & Whitstable.

Sue Cliffe, Age UK said: "Since 2011, Age UK has been providing specialist dementia services and social opportunities to more than 600 local residents a week at the site on Reculver Road but our needs are growing. It’s really exciting to have gained planning permission for the extension to our building. There is still a long way to go as we need to raise the necessary funds but it’s a really important step in the right direction, those wishing to consider taking space within the extended centre or who wish to donate please contact Sue on 01227 749570."

Pat Mills, partner at Clague Architects, said: "With the population ageing and demand for day and specialist dementia care increasing, Age UK had to consider its long-term plans for the centre. Clague’s work at the Herne Bay center in Reculver Road started in 2010 when it designed the conversion and refurbishment of the former Friendly Society Convalescent Home to provide the new home for Age UK Herne Bay & Whitstable and we were delighted to be asked by the Board of Trustees to help with their new plans.

Work to develop the proposals and to fund raise will begin in 2019 and we would hope Age UK to be able to open its new extension in 2020."
