Age UK London Launches Survey to Uncover the Truth About Ageism in London

Published on 27 October 2025 01:09 PM

Age UK London has launched a vital new survey to uncover the reality about ageism in the capital. This follows research that revealed only 20% of older Londoners believe the city is a place where older people are valued. The charity is calling on people to share their experiences and help shape a campaign for change.

London is now the UK’s fastest ageing major city and the need to better understand the impact of ageism on older Londoners has never been greater. In London and across the UK discrimination based on age is one of the most overlooked forms of prejudice. These attitudes can affect people in all areas of life and often without people even realising.

According to the Centre for Ageing Better:

  • Nearly two-thirds of people over 50 report being treated or spoken to negatively because of their age.
  • Over half of the public believes UK society is ageist.
  • One in three people think older age is characterised by frailty, vulnerability, and dependency.
  • More than 40% of people have never really thought about ageism before.

Age UK London’s new survey aims to bring these hidden experiences to light. The charity wants to hear directly from older Londoners about how ageism has impacted their lives. Whether it’s being overlooked in healthcare, stereotyped in the media, or excluded from digital services.

“We know ageism is real, and we know it’s hurting people,” said John McGeachy, Campaigns Manager, Age UK London. “This survey is a chance for older Londoners to speak up and help us challenge the practices and attitudes that hold them back.”

“The insights gathered will inform Age UK London’s upcoming campaign for action, launching next year.”

All responses are confidential, and participation is open to anyone in London. The survey is here.
