The London Loo Alliance launched on World Toilet Day in November 2024, after Age UK London brought together a group or organisations passionate about public toilet provision in the capital.

About the London Loo Alliance

London Loo Alliance is a coalition of 15 charities, trade unions, civic societies, resident and community associations, researchers, equality campaigners and businesses, joining together to demand more and better public toilets in London.

What we believe

Insufficient and poor-quality public toilet provision impacts all Londoners but disproportionately affects older and disabled people, those with health conditions, pregnant women, itinerant workers, such as delivery and taxi drivers, as well as families with young children.

Public toilet provision is a matter of public health, inclusion for all members of society, the right to a dignified work environment and more.

Poor provision means many Londoners are not free to access London’s public spaces because of fears about the lack of decent toilets.

Good quality public toilet provision can improve people’s lives. It can also have significant benefits for the economy.

Our mission

To be the inclusive and welcoming city that we want to see, urgent action to improve provision is necessary. The Alliance will campaign for tangible action and calls on regional government, local government, businesses, transport operators and others to engage, communicate and play their part.

Key Alliance priorities

  • Holding Transport for London to account to help ensure delivery against the five-year ‘Improving our toilet provision’ plan.
  • Calling on the Mayor of London to develop a GLA public toilets plan to coordinate action on improving public toilet provision in areas where the Mayor of London has a role including, Transport for London, Night Time Strategy Guidance for boroughs, London Plan policy and funding from programmes such as the Good Growth Fund.
  • Calling on the Greater London Authority to strengthen policy on public toilet provision in the next London Plan. The London Plan is the strategic plan for London with a framework for development.
  • Campaigning for and supporting local authorities in London to take tangible steps to improve provision, including better public communications, more strategic approaches, and consideration of projects such as Community Toilet Schemes.
  • The Alliance is also supporting other initiatives such as the British Toilet Association’s Legalise Loos
