Crisis Hiding in Plain Sight
Published on 30 October 2025 10:03 AM
3.5 million older people are worried about the coming winter – and almost one in ten have no one to turn to for help, according to new research from Age UK.
As the national charity launches its Crisis Hiding in Plain Sight campaign, Age UK Norfolk is echoing the warning and urging local residents to look out for older neighbours, friends and relatives who may be struggling to keep warm, connected and financially secure this winter.
The figures paint a worrying picture:
- 3.5 million over-65s are worried about winter
- 1.2 million have no one to turn to
- 4.5 million fear they won’t be able to heat their homes adequately
- 2.1 million are worried about getting into debt
Age UK Norfolk is an independent local charity and proud partner of the national Age UK network, and we deliver vital support across the county through services such as information and advice, benefits checks, and companionship.
This winter, Age UK Norfolk is also running its Temperature check your winter campaign, visiting local communities with advice, information, and free practical items like room thermometers and electric blankets. Residents can check our Activities and Events page to see when the roadshow will be visiting their area.
“This report is clear on the challenges and stark choices,” said Ann Donkin, CEO of Age UK Norfolk. “Through our local campaign, we’re helping people stay warm, well and connected — and encouraging everyone in Norfolk to look out for older neighbours who might need support.”
Older people, families and carers can find advice on staying warm, managing bills, accessing financial help and more, by calling Age UK Norfolk’s Advice Line on 0300 500 1217 (Mon–Fri, 10am–4pm) or emailing advice@ageuknorfolk.org.uk.
