Aiming to improve the fitness levels of over 50s in North Tyneside, Active North Tyneside and Age UK North Tyneside are pleased to announce the “Walk in Water” initiative.

The initiative will provide a clearly marked, separate swimming lane for those who wish to gently exercise by walking through water.

So why walk in water? As we age, many of us struggle with health conditions such as COPD, weight management, musculoskeletal or neurological based conditions and struggle to exercise due to pain and/or discomfort caused by these conditions. Walking in water relieves pressure and weight from the body, specifically our joints, meaning that those experiencing pain from conditions such as osteoarthritis may find a reduction in pain when in the water.

“The ‘Walk in Water’ initiative is an excellent way to encourage people who have difficulty trying to start physical exercise to find a fun and enjoyable way to keep active. It is also often a great way to begin rehabilitation and/ or recovery from surgery. The programme is a fantastic idea and will be a real asset to the North Tyneside community”

David Mercer, Specialist Senior Physiotherapist for Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

If you would like to lose weight, build confidence and maybe take the first steps into improving your health or getting back into exercise why not give it a try.  Age UK staff will be available in the Leisure Centre foyers from 30 minutes before each session starts and for a cuppa in the café afterward to support you and answer any questions.

Walk in Water is part of a wider project by Age UK North Tyneside; Active Age. The project aims to help over 50s in North Tyneside to get active and access exercise classes and schemes that fit in best with their lifestyle.

The Walk in Water sessions are due to start on 1st July at the following locations and times:

Lakeside Centre

Monday 09.00-10.00
Friday 09.00-10.00

Hadrian Leisure Centre

Tuesday 08.30-09.15
Friday 08.35-09.05

The Friday sessions will coincide with another Active North Tyneside initiative: Free Swim Fridays where over 60s can access the swimming pool for free. A representative of Age UK North Tyneside will be available for a chat in the café at the Friday sessions.
