Age UK Oxfordshire celebrates years of dedication this Volunteers’ Week

Published on 02 June 2025 07:40 AM

Age UK Oxfordshire is proud to celebrate Volunteers Week 2025 by recognising the incredible dedication and impact of its volunteers. Every day, they provide companionship, support, and vital services that help older people and unpaid carers live well.

This year, the charity honours Jo Doherty and Ian Philipson, two long-service volunteers who have dedicated many years to supporting older people and unpaid carers in the county.

For 25 years, Jo has been a steadfast force of kindness in Oxfordshire through volunteering for the charity’s telephone befriending service, Phone Friends, combating loneliness among older people.

Jo, a former nurse, faced isolation after early retirement due to health reasons. Seeking purpose, she joined Phone Friends, and she has remained a dedicated volunteer, making weekly calls to six individuals who feel lonely, providing conversation, warmth and companionship.

During lockdown, when loneliness and isolation increased dramatically, Jo went above and beyond - doubling her calls, dedicating entire Fridays to checking in on those in need. Over the years, she has built countless friendships, with many Phone Friends looking forward to their weekly chats and speaking fondly of her unwavering support.

Jo’s dedication, compassion, and reliability make her a truly outstanding volunteer, demonstrating the incredible impact that human connection can have.

For nearly 15 years, Ian has been a dedicated digital support volunteer, helping older people navigate an increasingly digital world. Whether teaching FaceTime to reconnect families, guiding individuals to engage with local activities, or assisting with online forms, Ian has always gone above and beyond.

His approach is thoughtful and compassionate, always considering personal needs and necessary adjustments. Clients consistently describe him as “approachable, patient, and kind.” One lady, recently bereaved and feeling isolated, shared that Ian’s support had been “life-changing for me.”

"As we celebrate Volunteers’ Week, we want to thank every volunteer who gives their time to Age UK Oxfordshire," said Paul Ringer, CEO. "Their generosity and commitment are at the heart of everything we do, making a profound difference in the lives of older people and unpaid carers. We are committed to engaging volunteers in a way that best makes use of their diversity and passion for our cause; as part of one team."
