Oxfordshire comes together for International Day of Older People

Published on 08 October 2025 03:18 PM

Oxfordshire came together this autumn as communities across the county marked the International Day of Older People. Age UK Oxfordshire were delighted to be out and about to celebrate the day and the huge contribution older people make to our communities.

This year’s UK theme, "Building Belonging: Celebrating the Power of Our Social Connections," felt especially fitting, as each event highlighted just how important connection, creativity and community are to wellbeing at every age.

The celebrations began early in Bicester, where the Bicester East Community Centre welcomed older residents for a day of activities from walking football to junk journaling. One participant said, “I came to have a go at junk journaling – it’s so calming,” capturing the day’s relaxed and friendly atmosphere perfectly.

On 1st October, we joined the Oxford 50+ Network at Oxford Town Hall, where organisations from across the county came together to share information, ideas and support. Alongside our colleagues from our dementia service, Dementia Oxfordshire and sister organisation, Carers Oxfordshire, we enjoyed connecting with visitors and celebrating the many ways older people enrich life in Oxfordshire.

The following day, Exeter Hall in Kidlington hosted another lively event, with more junk journaling, Total Tone 50+ exercise sessions and plenty of opportunities for people to connect.

Then, on 8th October, the celebrations moved north to Banbury, where the Mill Arts Centre buzzed with energy as people tried their hand at bollywood and ballroom dancing, tai chi chih, yoga and reminiscence sessions.

In a lovely tribute to the occasion, Banbury Town Council lit up local landmarks including Banbury Cross, the Fine Lady Statue and Banbury Town Hall in purple – a warm and visible celebration of older people in the town.

It was great to collaborate with local authorities and partners across Oxfordshire who made these events possible.

We’d love to hear how you marked the International Day of Older People – share your stories with us over on Facebook.
