Age UK Bolton has become one of the area’s most significant, dynamic and highly regarded charities  working with and on behalf of Bolton’s over 50 population. Essentially a local charity, we are also proud to be a brand partner of the influential national Age UK charity.

Role Description

As a digital befriender you would support over 50s in their own homes who may be less familiar with technology to use their smartphones, tablets or laptops with confidence. The role is not just about technology, but also creating a meaningful connection and encouraging digital inclusion. Volunteers will be paired with clients for a period of approximately 6 weeks, providing 1-hour weekly sessions.

Specific responsibilities

  • Weekly visits to individuals in their own homes providing basic digital guidance and companionship
  • Offer patient and individually tailored guidance on using smartphones, tablets and computers based on need.
  • Provide personalised support with an ability to adapt your teaching style based on clients skill level to ensure they are comfortable with technology over time.
  • Emphasise the importance of digital safety and security; importance of strong passwords, identifying scams and protecting personal information
  • Friendly, patient and caring companionship during the sessions
  • Respect the privacy of the clients you are supporting
  • Help people build digital confidence
  • Work as part of a team with other Age UK Bolton staff and volunteers.

Skills and Qualifications

  • A genuine interest in helping others
  • Skilled at using smart phones, tablets and computers for basic online tasks
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patience
  • An open-minded approach to individuals, avoiding judgement and stereotyping.
  • A liking for and interest in working with older people
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Willingness to attend training and other events and to be able to commit to regular volunteering hours.
  • Willingness to undergo an Enhanced DBS check (criminal records check)

Time Requirements

We would ideally be looking for people to commit to volunteering for 1 hour per week at a time and day to suit you.
