Celebrating 50 years of Age Cymru West Glamorgan
Published on 04 June 2025 09:00 AM
This year marks a special milestone for us at Age Cymru West Glamorgan - our 50th birthday. Since 1975, we've been dedicated to improving the lives of older people across Swansea, Neath Port Talbot, and Bridgend. Our local charity has grown into a vital support network for tens of thousands of older individuals and their families.
Over the past five decades, we’ve expanded our work to include a wide range of practical services - from dementia support and digital skills to information and advice, community engagement, and advocacy. Everything we do is centred around helping older people to age well, feel heard, and live with dignity and independence.
But right now, the need for our services has never been greater.
With the continuing pressures on social care and the rising cost of living, more and more people are turning to us for support. That’s why we’re launching our 50th Birthday Appeal - a call to action for our community to help us safeguard and strengthen our services for the years to come.
What Your Support Helps Us Do
Our appeal focuses on five key areas where your help can make a real difference:
- Living well with dementia: Tailored support that helps individuals and families maintain independence and quality of life.
- Taking the time to listen: A friendly voice, a listening ear – we make sure no one feels alone.
- A trusted source of advice: Free, confidential guidance to help people navigate the challenges they face.
- Standing up for better support: We campaign for fairer policies that meet the real needs of older people.
- Helping people embrace the digital world: Making technology accessible, so everyone can stay informed and connected.
Real Stories, Real Impact
John Whiffin, one of our service users, shared just how much our support has meant to him:
“Without Age Cymru West Glamorgan, I’d be lost, and people like me would simply go without. One of the first things that goes is your confidence and it shakes you up. The services and help I had from Age Cymru West Glamorgan was second to none. I wouldn’t have had the knowledge that things like Lasting Power of Attorney, benefits checks, and help with adjustments to improve home energy even existed.”
A Message from Our Chief Officer
Connor James, Chief Officer of Age Cymru West Glamorgan, said:
“As we celebrate this milestone, we reflect on the thousands of lives we’ve touched over the past 50 years. We’ve overcome huge challenges – from funding cuts to the Covid-19 pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis. Our work is far from over, and with the community's support, we can continue to make a meaningful difference for many years to come.”
