How the Strong and Steady Programme Transformed My Confidence, Mobility, and Daily Life
The Strong and Steady programme has been life‑changing for many people looking to improve their balance, mobility, and overall wellbeing. One recent participant shared her inspiring experience - highlighting not only the physical benefits, but also the powerful social and emotional impact of taking part.
A Warm, Welcoming Start
Before joining the programme, she wasn’t entirely convinced it would make a difference.
“I wasn’t convinced it was going to work for me to begin with. I’ve been really surprised with how I’ve been getting on.”
From day one, she found the exercises easy to follow and the atmosphere friendly and supportive. The simple, structured approach helped her build confidence at her own pace.
Rediscovering Confidence and Independence
Since completing the programme, she has noticed significant improvements in balance, mobility, and everyday confidence:
- She can now reach high cupboards without worrying about falling.
- She feels able to bend down, pick things up, and move around without embarrassment or fear.
- She can correct her balance if she overreaches - something she struggled with before.
“My confidence is definitely higher. My balance has improved… I know I can stand up and walk without holding on to things.”
These changes have been particularly meaningful following her stroke, which had an impact on both her confidence and awareness of her right leg.
A Social Lifeline
One of the highlights of Strong and Steady has been the social side:
“Cake and coffee after! The social activities and chat and friendliness of the group.”
The sessions provide valuable one‑to‑one interaction, a sense of community, and uplifting encouragement from others on a similar journey.
She has also found that the group atmosphere is non‑competitive and supportive:
“Everyone else encourages you… you’re doing OK.”
Taking Ownership of Health and Progress
The programme has given her tools to stay in control of her health and wellbeing. She often practices exercises at home, adapting them to support her right leg and improving her awareness and strength.
She especially enjoys having optional “homework” because it encourages her to push herself further.
“The programme has helped me feel more in control. If I don’t do well in class, I take the exercise home and see if I can adapt it.”
Benefits Noticed by Family and Friends
The positive changes haven’t gone unnoticed. Her loved ones have seen improvements in:
- Confidence
- Happiness
- Vocabulary and communication
- Social interaction
“They can see my confidence has improved… and I am happier.”
Looking Ahead: Continuing the Journey
She is eager to continue attending and exploring future classes or follow‑on activities.
She already stays active through local groups such as knit‑and‑natter and weekly shopping trips - but Strong and Steady has added new motivation and structure to her weekly routine.
Her Advice to Anyone Thinking of Joining
“I’d tell them 100% to join. You’ve got nothing to lose. It’s a nice friendly group - no competition, just a friendly bunch. And the cakes afterwards are lovely!”
She strongly recommends the programme to others, especially because participants can move up to the next level (Live Stronger for Longer community classes) while staying with people they’ve built connections with. Now she's left the programme, she's even signed up as a volunteer with weekly Strong and Steady session.
Praise for the Instructors
The instructors, Sue and Natasha, made a powerful impression:
“They are really encouraging. They’re quick to notice if an exercise isn’t being done correctly, to prevent injuries.”
Their guidance ensures everyone feels safe, supported, and able to progress with confidence.
