Practical help for living at home

Published on 13 April 2026 10:18 AM

If you’re starting to find everyday tasks more difficult, there’s support available to help you stay safe and independent at home.

At Age UK East Sussex, we can help you understand your options and find the right support locally.

What kind of help is available?

Support at home can be flexible, depending on your needs. This may include:

  • Help with personal care, such as washing or getting dressed
  • Support with household tasks like cleaning or preparing meals
  • Equipment or adaptations to make your home safer
  • Short-term help after a hospital stay or longer-term care

Getting support through your local council

A good first step is to request a care needs assessment from East Sussex County Council. This is free and looks at what support you may need.

If you’re eligible, the council will also carry out a financial assessment to see whether it can help with costs.

Even if you don’t qualify for funded care, you’ll still receive advice on local services and support available.

Arranging care yourself

You can also arrange care independently. This gives you more choice over how and when support is provided, whether through a care agency or a personal assistant.

Help with costs

Some people are eligible for financial support towards home care. This depends on your income and savings, but you may also qualify for benefits that can help with day-to-day living costs.
