Love in later life: Why dating doesn't have an expiry date

Published on 17 August 2026 09:52 AM

Everything changes as you get older; that much we know. But what about the things you don't expect?

The modern dating world

Modern technology has caused many discussions around accessibility for older people for things such as banking, appointments, and social media. But what about dating and meeting new people?

Dating apps have become increasingly popular over the years, allowing people to meet people and date based on an online profile. Older people taking up the offer of dating apps has grown in recent years. However, this isn’t the only option to meet new people.

Companionship and connection

Loneliness and social isolation are detrimental to both mental and physical wellbeing. We need to stay connected to other people, and romantic relationships play just as large a part in that as friendships for some people.

For others, having someone to talk to is enough.

Finding friendship

Age UK North Tyneside might not have a matchmaking service, but we do offer plenty of opportunities to meet new people. Social Groups allow you to meet people based on common interests, or by trying a new hobby.

  • Art Social
  • Wellbeing Walks
  • Book Club
  • Ladies Who Lunch
  • Uber Social Café

If you’re more active, you can find new people across our Physical Activities. You can access a membership for £30 a month, which allows you to attend all Physical Activities, any day, any time.

We have an increasingly ageing population, which is only predicted to grow. If online dating is something that sounds like it’s for you, we can help you get started with these simple steps.

  • Using a smartphone, laptop, or computer, visit your dating site of choice (there are many out there)
  • Create your profile; include pictures of yourself that show who you are as a person (hobbies and pets are great conversation starters)
  • Set your preferences and boundaries (think about what you’re looking for in a person)
  • See who’s out there. There’s no recipe to online dating; trial and error help navigate who you’re looking for.

Always remember, safety first. Be cautious of sharing information online and only share what you’re comfortable with. For support with online questions, we have a Digital Drop-in Volunteer you can get support from. For more information, contact our Customer Services Team on Customer.Services@ageuknorthtyneside.org.uk
