How to stay safe during a heatwave

With rising summer temperatures, it's important for older adults in Westminster to take simple steps to protect their health.
🔹 1. Be prepared
– Check the forecast—heatwaves are defined as ≥3 days above thresholds (e.g. ≥28 °C for Greater London)
🔹 2. Stay cool at home
– Close blinds and curtains on sunny windows during the day; open windows at night for a cool breeze
– Take cool showers or baths; apply damp cloths to the back of your neck or chest
– Avoid running hot electrical devices; turn off lights and appliances not in use
🔹 3. Keep hydrated & eat well
– Drink water regularly—even if you don’t feel thirsty
– Avoid alcohol and limit caffeinated drinks
– Eat water-rich foods like fruit and salads and don’t skip meals
🔹 4. Smart outdoor habits
– Avoid being outside between 11 am and 3 pm, the hottest part of the day
– If out, choose the shade, wear broad-brimmed hats, sunglasses (UV‑400), loose light-coloured clothing, and apply SPF 30+ sunscreen
– Plan walks or errands in early morning or evening, not midday
🔹 5. Know the warning signs

🔹 6. Check on others
– People aged 65+, those with underlying health conditions or living alone are at greater risk
– Regularly check in with older neighbours, family or friends—and encourage them to do the same
🔹 7. Find cooler spaces
– Visit air-conditioned spots like local libraries, community hubs, churches, or even shops for a short break
❓ Need help or have questions?
– Call Age UK Advice Line: 0800 678 1602 (8 am–7 pm, daily)

Heatwaves can feel pleasant, but for many older adults they carry real risks. By planning, staying cool, staying hydrated, and helping each other, we can enjoy the summer safely in Westminster.
