How we are funded

We rely on your support to keep serving the community. We are supported by donations from the public, income from our charity shop, and some charitable grants.

Who we are and what we do

Age UK Blackburn with Darwen was established in 1976 as a local independent registered charity. Over the last 40 years we have worked with thousands of local older people providing a range of community based services. We are a member of the national Age England Association, which is made up of partners across England. Our common cause is to help make later life fulfilling and enjoyable experience and promote the wellbeing of older people.

Campaigning and influencing

As well as providing a range of community services, we seek to effect change by influencing decision-makers and educating the wider community on issues affecting older people.

Our aim is to make the policies and practice of the local authority, health services and other organisations and services sensitive to the real needs and aspirations of older people.

We also work in partnership with a range of organisations to ensure the provision of a range of high quality services and activities.

We also support campaigns on issues affecting the lives of older people locally and nationally.

Staff and volunteers

In order to ensure we provide quality and effective services we rely upon the commitment, skills and experience of our team of staff and volunteers.

We currently have 50 staff and over 130 volunteers who work across our services. We continually aim to improve our work through a wide variety of training and development and we hold an Investors in People award which ensures we maintain this aim.

What we do

  • We give advice

Our trained advisors offer free information and advice to older people and their families. In 2016 our advisers helped local older people to claim over £500,000 that they were entitled to.

  • We offer home help

We offer home support services to help with shopping, cleaning and gardening. We help over 100 older people to get their food shopping every month.

  • We befriend

Our volunteer befrienders visit lonely older people in the community who have no one to talk to. In 2016 our volunteers visited 300 older people who would otherwise be alone.

  • We provide activities

Our day centre has a wide range of activity groups and events, such as lunch clubs and exercise classes, giving older people the opportunity to keep fit, socialise, or learn a new skill.
