Local Partnership Breaks Down Barriers For Older Men

A partnership between Age UK Bolton and Bolton Wanderers FC is helping to break down barriers for older men accessing support in Bolton.
Age UK Bolton is an official Business Partner of Bolton Wanderers Football Club for the 2025-26 season, meaning its vital services and support for older people will reach a new audience that do not always traditionally engage with the charities services.
Lauren McKechnie, CEO of Age UK Bolton, said: "This partnership is an example of how Bolton is stronger when our local businesses and charities come together. Connecting Age UK Bolton with Bolton Wanderers means that people who might not have been aware of who we are and what we do, are now seeing us and hearing our message."
A two-year study by Age UK showed that many men over 65 have difficulty seeking help and talking about loneliness because of stigma around mental health and fears of embarrassment.
The older men in the study said they struggled to access support because of older people's clubs mainly being for women and a feeling that they should remain independent.
Bolton Wanderers' partnership with Age UK Bolton is helping to raise awareness about the help and support available for older men through the charity, such as Information and Advice, Ageing Well activities and cleaning, shopping and handyperson services.
As part of the partnership, Age UK Bolton has also proudly launched the Age UK Bolton Goldline Lottery in partnership with Bolton Wanderers Development Association (BWDA).
For every £1 you pay, Age UK Bolton receives 50p, which helps us to provide friendship, connection and support for Bolton’s older people – today and for generations to come. To join, simply email goldline@bwfc.co.uk and ask to sign up to the Age UK Bolton Goldline Lottery.*
