Finding Joy Again: How Our Services Helped Ms M Rebuild Her Confidence and Community

Published on 15 July 2025 10:10 AM

After a series of life-changing events, 77-year-old Ms M found herself facing loneliness and limited mobility. A Greenwich resident born in Woolwich, she had built a full life with a career in legal admin and charity work, a long-term home in Thamesmead, and a loving marriage. But after losing her husband in 2012 and being involved in a serious hit-and-run four years ago, everything changed.

“I couldn’t walk far anymore,” she said. “I had to stop going to the theatre with friends. It led to mild depression. I was stuck.”

Then, a simple poster in her local chemist introduced her to Age UK Bromley & Greenwich’s Seated Yoga classes. From there, things began to shift.

A route back to confidence and connection

The seated yoga sessions helped relieve some of Ms M’s joint pain and gave her a reason to leave the house. She later joined a Thursday social club in Abbey Wood, just a short distance from home.

“I’ve met some interesting, lovely people,” she told us. “Andrea, who runs the group, brings in fantastic guest speakers, some of them have gone on to help me directly.”

Through these connections, Ms M also heard about our Mid-Summer Party at Richard Neve House. Despite mobility challenges, she went and had a brilliant time.

“There was plenty to eat and drink, a brilliant DJ, and I was even asked to dance. I felt so well looked after. I thoroughly enjoyed myself.”

Practical help when it matters

Ms M also met Tracey, one of our Information & Advice team members, who carried out a full benefits check.

“I didn’t think I’d be entitled to anything,” Ms M said. “But Tracey helped me apply for Attendance Allowance, and I now receive it. She also helped me get a Blue Badge. I’m so very grateful to her.”

“They’ve given me back the joy to live my life.”

Today, Ms M continues to attend our groups and is keen to stay connected with her community. Her mobility is still limited, but the support she receives has made a real difference to how she feels day to day.

“The activities mean I get out of the house, meet new people, and have something to look forward to,” she said. “They’ve given me back the joy to live my life.”

We’re proud to walk alongside Ms M on this next chapter.
