Celebrating a World Record and Falls Prevention Week

As part of Falls Prevention Week, Age UK Derby and Derbyshire's Live Stronger for Longer team hosted a special Guinness World Records celebration event at the newly renovated Grammar in Heanor on Friday 25 September 2026.

The event marked the first anniversary of an incredible achievement that saw over 1,200 people gather at Chesterfield FC's stadium in September 2025 for the the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS attempt for the largest chair-based exercise lesson. Following official verification, the record was confirmed at 1,163 participants, achieved by Age UK Derby and Derbyshire and Chesterfield FC Community Trust on 25 September 2025.

The celebration brought together participants from Live Stronger for Longer classes across Derbyshire, alongside members from two Strong and Steady classes. Guests were also joined by Derbyshire County Council Vice Chairman, Councillor Rob Reaney, and colleagues from Derbyshire County Council Public Health, whose support has been instrumental in the continued success of falls prevention services across the county.

The day began with a lively exercise demonstration led by Tim and Sonia, showcasing some of the activities delivered through the Live Stronger for Longer programme. Participants thoroughly enjoyed taking part in routines set to favourites including Benny Hill, Is This the Way to Amarillo? and Oops Upside Your Head, creating plenty of smiles, laughter and energy throughout the room.

Following the exercise session, guests enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch featuring a selection of sandwiches, savouries, cakes and a tasty fruit platter. The relaxed atmosphere provided an opportunity for participants to catch up with friends, share memories of the world record attempt and celebrate their collective achievement.

One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS certificate. Councillor Rob Reaney presented the certificate to Jo Briggs, Falls Prevention Manager, in recognition of the dedication, teamwork and enthusiasm that made the record-breaking achievement possible. The presentation was followed by speeches, photographs and an opportunity to reflect on the impact that strength and balance activities continue to have on older people across Derbyshire.

The afternoon concluded with time for socialising and enjoying the remaining buffet while participants, staff and partners celebrated together. It was a fitting way to mark Falls Prevention Week and to recognise not only a remarkable world record, but also the ongoing importance of helping people stay active, independent and stronger for longer.

A huge thank you goes to everyone who attended the celebration, all those who took part in the original world record attempt, our dedicated staff team, colleagues from Public Health, and the many participants who continue to support and champion falls prevention activities across Derbyshire. Their enthusiasm and commitment are helping to make a real difference to people's lives every day.
