Coffee Morning & Social Events Volunteer
Role Context
Age UK Ealing is dedicated to improving the lives of older people in the borough. We offer a range of services and support that promote independence, wellbeing, and social connection. Our volunteers are vital to helping us achieve this mission.
The befriending service aims to reduce social isolation and loneliness in older adults ages 65 and over. The service works closely with volunteers who are trained and matched with service users. The three main services we offer within Befriending is Neighbourly Connectors (face-to-face befriending), Telephone Support (over the phone befriending), and Social Events (monthly coffee mornings and community activities for mobile clients).
Purpose of the role
To assist Befriending Co-ordinators in supporting older people who are experiencing loneliness and isolation through coffee mornings and social events.
A Coffee Morning & Social Events Volunteer will:
- Support them at the event with requests on the activities taking place on the day, or even help guiding them around the building
- Ensure service users feel comfortable and safe
- Interact with service users through warm, friendly and inclusive conversation
- Making and serving tea and coffee
- Serving food
- Assist with set up prior to the event
- Assist with cleaning/tidying at the end of the event
- Assist the Befriending Co-ordinator in the smooth running of the events
- Be committed to the values of Age UK Ealing
Personal qualities most suited to this role:
- A people person with empathy and the natural desire to help others.
- Confident, enthusiastic, and able to deal sympathetically, patiently, and sensitively with all elderly service users
- Good interpersonal skills, vigilant with good use of common sense
- Reliable with good time keeping
- Able to maintain confidentiality
Location: Greenford Community Centre and other locations across the London Borough of Ealing
Time is involved: Coffee Morning at Greenford Community Centre every first Wednesday of the month from 10am-1.30pm, Coffee Morning at an Acton location every first Tuesday of the month from 10am-1.30pm, Movie Club at Greenford Community Centre every second Tuesday of the month from 10am-1.30pm.
Expenses and Insurance: We will cover agreed out-of-pocket expenses for volunteers (e.g., travel costs). We provide insurance cover for the time you are volunteering with us. This role is offered subject to satisfactory references and Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, and we can help you to obtain a free DBS certificate.
