Betty's story - returning home after a stay in hospital can be worrying

Published on 16 June 2026 09:41 AM

After spending time in hospital with flu and other health problems, 80-year-old Betty was looking forward to returning home. But when she arrived back at her flat, things didn't go quite as planned.

Living alone and managing asthma, Betty was already feeling anxious about leaving hospital. When she got home, she discovered her heating wasn't working and the flat was cold. Understandably, she became worried and breathless.

Thankfully, she wasn't facing this alone.

Through our Take Home and Settle service, an Age UK East Sussex worker was there to help Betty get safely home and settled in. Realising the urgency of the situation, they contacted the landlord and heating company, arranging for an engineer to visit within just a few hours.

But their support didn't stop there.

While waiting for the engineer, they spent time talking with Betty and getting to know her. They learned that although she enjoyed trips into town and attending church, life could sometimes feel challenging. Together, they explored local activities and lunch clubs that might help her meet new people and stay connected to her community.

A few hours later, the heating was fixed, the flat was warm again, and Betty had information about local groups she was excited to try.

For Betty, the practical help mattered. Her story is a reminder that returning home from hospital isn't always straightforward. Sometimes, having someone there to help can make all the difference.
