Janet's Story

Janet Andrews chats with Roz Wyllie, our Head of Engagement, on why she enjoys volunteering for Age UK Hertfordshire.
Janet is a volunteer for our Active Ageing Service and helps out at our Royston 10 to 3 Club and has been volunteering there for two years.
Why did you decide to volunteer for Age UK Hertfordshire?
I retired from my job as a primary school teacher in 2017 and I was keen to take up some voluntary work. Volunteering in schools might have been the natural choice but I have always enjoyed the company of older people, so contacted Age UK Hertfordshire and was lucky to be placed as a volunteer, and I love my time there.
What does volunteering at the 10 to 3 Club involve?
Club starts at 10 when we serve coffee and cake, followed by a chat and an activity which might a game of bingo, quiz and always a raffle. Sometimes we take our clients out on day trips along the riverside and local garden centres for a bit of retail therapy.
"I have made friends with the team, and most importantly the clients. I look forward to seeing them every week and hearing their stories."
How has your volunteering role changed during COVID-19?
Sadly, since the lockdown there has been no clubs open. I feel really sad for our clients who are having to stay at home, some of them living alone, and not being able to see their friends and family. I have three clients who I ring on a weekly basis for a chat and to ask if they need any shopping. It's the least I can do and wish I could do more to help.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of volunteering for Age UK Hertfordshire?
It goes without saying that I find volunteering extremely rewarding and would encourage others to try
