What is Zoom?

Zoom is an internet-based video meeting service you can use to see and talk to others who are not in the same location as you. This is mainly done by using a computer or smart phone, however you can also phone in.

How much does it Cost?

It is free for you to join a meeting that has been set up by someone else. You can also set up a free account and organise your own meetings if you want. If you phone in, this may be chargeable and you need to check with the person organising the meeting and/or your phone provider. In addition, using Zoom uses data if you do not use free wifi.

Do I need special equipment to use it?

If you want to join in the meeting and be able to see the other people present, you need to have a device that has a camera and a microphone. If you do not have these, you may still be able to join in by writing in the "chat" box. You can also phone in on a basic phone. This may be chargeable and you need to check with the person organising the meeting and/or your phone provider.

How do I join a meeting?

The meeting host should have sent you an email with a link to the meeting. If they have not done so, ask them for it. Click on the link and this should connect you. You can also join by entering the meeting reference number and password into the zoom app.

Is it Safe?

Zoom has been in the news recently with concerns around its security. There have been instances where unauthorised people have joined in meetings. We manage this by making these meetings invitation only and using the waiting list facility. This doesn't remove the risk totally, however reduces it significantly.
