Keeping Your Strength, Balance and Preventing Falls

Staying active is one of the best things you can do to maintain your independence and reduce your risk of falling. Every year, one in three people aged 65 and over experiences a fall, but the good news is that many falls can be prevented.

Regular movement, strength and balance exercises can help you stay steady on your feet, build stronger muscles and bones, and give you greater confidence in everyday activities.

In this 20-minute video, Wabz, Physiotherapist with the Integrated Community Ageing Team, explains why falls happen, what you can do to reduce your risk, and shares practical tips that you can easily incorporate into your daily routine.

Worried about falls

If you've had falls or a GP thinks you're at risk of falls, they'll check your balance and may refer you to a specialist falls service, such as the Proactive Ageing Well Service.

Help from a falls service may include:

  • checking for problems such as muscle weakness, weak bones (osteoporosis) or problems with your eyesight
  • strength and balance training
  • checking that your home is safe and making home adaptations.=
  • reviewing any medicines you're taking

You may also need treatment for any conditions that are affecting your balance or strength.
