Guidance for Staying Safe in Hot Weather
A reminder that hot weather can sometimes lead to dehydration, overheating and exhaustion, so it’s important to take a little extra care over the coming days.
Stay safe and look out for others who may be vulnerable.
Remember to follow the DUCKS:
Drink water – Don’t’ wait until you’re thirsty. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks as they can dehydrate you
Use shade/keep cool
Check on neighbours - especially those who are aged 65 and over and those with underlying illnesses
Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke
Stay in a cool space
If you think someone may have heatstroke
Call 111 if you think someone may have heatstroke. Call 999 in an emergency.
Find a Cool Space
Check for your nearest Islington Cool Space. These are community venues including libraries and community centres where you can rest, cool down and access drinking water.
Click for a Printable List of Cool Spaces
Call the venue ahead of going along or check the Council Cool Spaces website.
Help improve the way the news report on heatwaves
So often the photos that the media use of heatwaves don't reflect the reality of every day life - how we feel in the heat and the impact of heat.
Researchers at the University of Exeter, want to learn about your experiences of heat in London over this summer. Your experiences can directly feed into their work creating a new set of images for news organisations that better reflect the everyday lives of people in the UK. They would love to hear from you.
Being involved means taking photos over this summer and then sharing your pictures and stories with us in the Autumn. Theywould love to hear from you!
