Let's Talk - Staying Safe and Hate Crime

Published on 31 July 2026 11:55 AM

Let's Talk in July focused on hate crime and how to keep safe when out and about in Islington. We were joined by the Islington Council Hate Crime Prevention and Safer Spaces team and the Met Police.

Keeping Safe in Islington

When does a crime become a hate crime? Natalia from Islington Council explains the difference, why it matters, and what you can do if you ever witness or experience a hate crime.

She also introduces Islington’s network of over 250 Safehavens – local businesses, libraries, community centres and leisure centres displaying the Safehaven badge.

Look out for the Safehaven signs - once you know about them, you'll be amazed how many there are!

They're there if you ever feel unsafe, are being harassed, feel unwell, or simply need support. Step inside and someone will be there to help.

❤️ Watch the talk from the comfort of your own home!

Staying safe information guide

No one wants to feel unsafe, especially when we’re in our own homes. Unfortunately, as we get older, we might start to feel a little less safe, whether that’s because of mobility issues or feeling more vulnerable to scammers. Our guide can help to put your mind at ease.

This guide suggests things you can do to feel safer – around your home, when you’re out and about and when you’re online. It covers:

  • boosting security around your home
  • fire and electrical safety
  • safety in taxis and on public transport
  • what to do if you receive a suspicious email.

It also includes a glossary of important digital terms to help you feel more confident online.
