Claiming benefits? You don't need to pay for help

Published on 19 October 2026 01:04 PM

Did you know that applying for benefits such as Attendance Allowance is free?

Some older people are being contacted by companies offering to help them claim benefits or correct gaps in their National Insurance records, often in exchange for a fee.

While these services aren't necessarily illegal, the fees can sometimes amount to hundreds of pounds. In some cases, people may not realise they've agreed to pay for a service until they've already entered into an agreement.

At Age UK North Tyneside, we want to remind older people and their families that you don't need to pay a company to make a benefits claim, and free, independent support is available.

What should you look out for?

Claims Management Companies (CMCs) may contact you offering to help with applications for benefits such as Attendance Allowance or issues relating to Home Responsibilities Protection (HRP).

Attendance Allowance is a benefit that can help older people who need extra support with personal care or supervision because of a disability or health condition.

Home Responsibilities Protection is a scheme that previously helped protect National Insurance records for people who took time away from work to care for children or others. Missing records could affect someone's State Pension entitlement.

Although companies may offer to manage these processes on your behalf, it's important to remember that making these claims directly is free.

Before agreeing to any paid service, take time to understand what you're signing up for, whether there are any fees involved and whether you could access the same support for free. Reach out to us for a free service to showcase what exactly you can do without paying, and what other benefits you might be eligible for.
