Imagine a day when...
you didn't see anyone...
no one called in...
no one phoned, or texted or Facebooked you...
you had no contact with anyone else from getting up to going to bed.

Now imagine that the next day was the same,
and the next,
and the next...

Everybody should have somebody

Most of us have felt very lonely and alone at some point in our lives. It’s a profoundly personal and painful experience and people can feel completely hopeless. Luckily for many, life moves on and these feelings pass. But for some of us loneliness can become chronic, making us miserable and often causing us to lose self-confidence. It can become increasingly difficult to build new and meaningful relationship that could restore our sense of self and self-worth. The fact that loneliness carries a stigma can make it hard to admit to it and seek help. And often people don’t know where to go for support.

Loneliness is associated with depression, sleep problems, impaired cognitive health, heightened vascular resistance, hypertension, psychological stress and mental health problems. Especially in older people.

Alone we can make a difference. Together we can make a change.

Thanks to you, we opened the Friendship Line in July 2018, to offer telephone befriending to lonely older people living in more rural areas.

With your donations and support we aim to develop our befriending services in Northumberland to reconnect lonely older people with society. This includes increasing the reach of the Friendship Line and introduce more Social Fridays groups to our local communities.

How you can reduce loneliness

  • Take time for a cuppa

We all have time to stop for a cuppa and we are encouraging to use that time to engage with neighbours and older people in your community. By hosting a fundraising tea party, you will be raising vital funds for befriending services across the county.
