The colder weather is now here and looking after your health during winter is vitally important.

The colder weather is now here and looking after your health during winter is vitally important. Here at Age UK Westminster, we wanted to share some simple things everyone can do to stay well.

Boost your immunity - have the flu and Covid-19 autumn booster

Vaccinations are important to help you stay well this winter - it is recommended that the over 50s have both jabs. If you haven't had a chance to have your jabs yet, just speak to your GP/local pharmacy or visit a community clinic.

Know where to get the right help when you need it

There are lots of NHS services to help you. Choosing the right service means you will get the right help quickly. 111 online (www.111.nhs.uk) can quickly direct you to the right service for your medical needs.

If you don't have access to the internet or are more comfortable on the telephone, please call 111 to find the service you need.

You can still call 999 if you, or someone you know is experiencing a life-threatening medical emergency.

Medication and pharmacy support

Order and collect repeat prescriptions before they run out. It is also a good idea to keep a well-stocked medicine cabinet to ensure you have all you need in case of minor ailments.

And if you need to speak to someone about a minor medical concern. For example: a rash, cough, cold or eye infection. You can speak to your local pharmacist; they are trained health professionals who can:

  • help you manage minor illnesses
  • offer confidential support without an appointment
  • help you with your medication
  • refer you to a GP/A&E if needed

No need for an appointment.

Staying active

Being active and staying connected to friends and family is important for your mental and physical health over the winter. If you are on your own - there are lots of organisations that can help (such as us, Age UK Westminster). Our activities timetable can be found here or visit hubofhope.co.uk for a full list of organisations offering support.

We hope that these tips will help you stay safe and well this winter.
