Our Befriending Volunteers help older people rediscover confidence, rebuild connections, and take positive steps toward a more fulfilling life.
This is more than companionship — it’s about walking alongside someone as they reconnect with their community and themselves.
About the role
As an Enabling Connections volunteer, you’ll be matched with an older person for a short-term jounrney lasting six months, helping them work towards what matters most to them.
You’ll provide encouragement, gentle support, and a friendly, consistent presence —helping them feel listened to, valued, and empowered to take next steps.
Much like being the welcoming face of a service, you’ll help shape a safe, supportive experience where trust can grow and confidence can build.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll support both the person and their goals, including:
Building a meaningful connection with an older person
- Spend time getting to know the person and what matters to them
- Offer friendly conversation, encouragement and companionship
- Create a space where they feel comfortable, heard and respected
Supporting positive steps forward
- Help them identify and work towards personal goals
- Encourage confidence in trying new things or reconnecting with others
- Support access to local groups, services or community activities
Flexible, person-centred support
- Meet in ways that suit the individual - this could be at home, in the community, or out for a walk
- Go at their pace, adapting support to their needs and preferences
Working as part of a team
- Share updates with your coordinator so support stays consistent
- Reflect on progress and celebrate achievements

Time commitments
This opportunity is a 6-month commitment to befriending an older person as part of our Enabling Connections project.
You'll spend 2-3 hours a week with the person you are matched with.
