Delegation from Seoul Volunteer Centre visits Age UK Bristol

15 September 2017

On Friday 15th September we welcomed a delegation from South Korea and we shared our experience with volunteers.

The delegation included managers from the Seoul Volunteer Centre, who were interested in learning more about our Active Together for Dementia project. The Seoul Volunteer Centre was set up in 1999 to contribute to the development of  local communities and improve the quality of life of their citizens.

The Active Together for Dementia project was set up in June 2016, and it's a partnership project between Age UK Bristol and Voscur.

The scheme matches volunteers with an older person living with dementia, with whom they have a common interest. So if an older person enjoys gardening, the project matches them with a volunteer who would also enjoy this activity.

The aim of the project is to increase physical activity of the person living with dementia. The activity also allows the pair to bond over a common interest.

The delegation was interested in learning more about the partership work with Voscur and about measuring impact. We were pleased to be able to share our experience with them, and to see their interested in what is currently happening here in Bristol.

During our presentation we also share how we train and support our volunteers. The project provides specialist training on dementia, and provides regular support as group sessions and individual assessments.

During our meet up, the delegation also had a chance to learn about other Age UK Bristol which include volunteers, such as Information & Advice and our Day Centre in Withywood. At Age UK Bristol, we are thankful of all the skills and experience our volunteers bring to the organisation.

The Active Together for Dementia project is currently looking for volunteers. This is a great opportunity if you are looking to share your passion or hobby and help an older person stay active, please get in touch with Clare Havard on
