David's story
David had always been independent. After the loss of his wife, he carried on alone, managing the house and taking care of Barra, his loyal dog. But over time, everyday tasks began to feel more difficult, and he realised he could use a little help.
It was his neighbour, a former Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin employee, who suggested he get in touch with us.
We quickly connected David to several of our services. Through the Help at Home team, we matched David with Clare, who visits him every week to help with domestic tasks such as cleaning, laundry, and shopping.
Clare’s help means David has more energy for the things he enjoys; he attends his local bowling club and takes Barra for walks, making sure his four-legged friend is well cared for. Clare’s visits have become a highlight too, not just for the practical support, but for the companionship, as the two always share a coffee and a chat.
Alongside the home support, Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin’s Information and advice team guided David through applying for Attendance Allowance. That extra income eased his financial worries and allowed him to pay for the support he needs, cover bills, and afford small changes to make his home more accessible and comfortable.
“It’s not just the practical help that’s made a difference, but the feeling of having somewhere to turn. The team are kind, knowledgeable, and always ready to listen.”
