Photograph of Marjorie at home

After falling seriously ill and no longer able to drive, Marjorie, 78, found herself stuck at home. With her husband working long hours, the days felt long and isolating.

It was a huge contrast to her working life as a carer, often working up to 60 hours a week and constantly surrounded by people. She loved her job and never hesitated to help someone in need. But in retirement, and with her health declining, the lack of daily interaction took its toll.

“Someone told me about Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin and that they would be able to help me, and with a phone call it was the best day’s work I ever did,” she says.

Marjorie was referred to our Befriending service and was matched with both a telephone buddy and a befriending volunteer. It’s now been seven years since that call, and she says it was one of the best decisions she ever made.

“When they visit, we have a cup of tea and a natter, we put the world to rights and sometimes we go for a walk. It’s my favourite hour of the week; I always look forward to the visits and phone calls.”

“I have a natter with Jonathan once a week over the phone and we have great banter; he rings no matter what. It’s nice to have someone to rely on, we always yap yap yap,” she laughs.

Over the years, Marjorie has met several volunteers through the service, each bringing something unique. She particularly appreciates how carefully Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin matches volunteers with people they’re likely to connect with; for Marjorie it’s people who share her energy, humour, and love of a good chat.

You can help more local people like Marjorie feel less alone. As we celebrate 75 years of supporting older people across Shropshire, a donation to our 75th anniversary appeal would make such a difference.
