Men's Health Week 2026
Published on 12 June 2026 12:05 PM
This Men’s Health Week, we want to talk about a topic that often gets overlooked: men’s health as we get older.
We know many men were brought up to “just get on with it”. GP appointments get postponed, aches and pains are ignored, mental wellbeing takes a back seat. Looking after yourself isn’t a sign of weakness though, it’s how you stay independent, active, and doing the things you love for longer.
Your body, your check-ins
After 50, regular health checks become even more important. Blood pressure, cholesterol, prostate health, and diabetes risk can all be managed better when caught early. If it’s been a while since your last GP check-up, Men’s Health Week is the perfect nudge to book one. It takes 10 minutes and could add years to your life. You can also ask a pharmacist for advice too.
Move more, feel better
You don’t need to suddenly do a triathlon. A brisk walk along the Wandle Trail, chair exercises at home or at Age UK Wandsworth’s day centre or joining a local walking group does wonders for your heart, joints, and mood. Our Age UK Wandsworth activity groups are full of men who started with “just one session” and stayed for the chat and company.
It’s okay to talk
Loneliness and low mood affect men of all ages, but older men are less likely to reach out. This week, check in on a mate. Pick up the phone. Share what’s on your mind. At Age UK Wandsworth we run befriending services and social groups where you can just be yourself, no pressure.
We also have an amazing Shed in Roehampton where you can use existing skills, take up a new woodworking hobby, and get to know your community better, all whilst having a hot drink and a chat with other local men.
Small steps this week
- Book that GP appointment you’ve been putting off or pop into your local chemist
- Go for a 15-minute walk today
- Call a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while
- Look at the activities and services available on the Age UK Wandsworth website
Above all, please look after yourself because your community in Wandsworth needs you fit, healthy, and around for all the good stuff still to come!
