Impact of Cambridgeshire County Council Decision to Cut Handyperson Service Funding

Cambridgeshire County Council has made the decision to withdraw funding for the Handyperson service delivered by Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, a move that will put vulnerable residents at risk.
The service, which provides practical home support for older and disabled people, has helped thousands remain safe and independent in their own homes. Supporters argue it is far more than a “minor adaptations” scheme, describing it as a vital preventative service that reduces falls, prevents accidents, and eases pressure on health and social care systems.
The council is expected to save £88,000 annually by ending the funding. Though we believe that the short-term saving could lead to significantly higher long-term costs. Without early intervention and home safety improvements, more residents could face hospital admissions, longer stays, and increased reliance on already stretched care services.
Advocates for the service say it plays a crucial role in maintaining dignity and independence for older and disabled residents. Simple measures such as installing grab rails, fixing trip hazards, and improving home safety can prevent serious injuries and allow people to live securely in familiar surroundings.
Concerns have also been raised about the broader impact of the funding cut, with fears that removing preventative support may ultimately increase pressure on the NHS and social care budgets.
Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are urging the council to reconsider the decision.

Handyperson Roger spoke to the BBC about the service and its importance.

Handyperson Service Future
We are working hard to identify a sustainable service model that will ensure the continuation of the Handyperson service. However, this is likely to mean that older and disabled people will need to contribute towards the cost of support. This is a cause for great concern, as it risks making the service inaccessible to many who simply cannot afford to pay.
