And I hate heights.

So obviously I've signed up to abseil 100m down the Spinnaker Tower.

Please dig deep, check down the back of the sofa, empty you car cup holder (you know who you are) or donate the coins your hoover has suckered up

Samantha Carter is fundraising for Age UK Isle of Wight

Here is what Brenda said:

"The last time I abseiled, was off the cliffs near Freshwater and it was approximately 60 years ago, So this will be slightly different!

I've got to an age (a mere 85) where if I don't do exciting things now I may get too old and not be able to do them!

After I did the sky dive last summer in aid of Age UK Isle of Wight I was pleased see that this summer they are offering the opportunity to abseil down the Spinnaker Tower, which is 170m tall - and I'm only about one 1.5m so that's a lot of abseiling!

I volunteer for Age UK Isle of Wight and I think they are a brilliant local charity who support older people on the Island."

Brenda Bumstead is fundraising for Age UK Isle of Wight

Here is what Charlotte said:

"Hi, I'm Charlotte, and 9 days after my 14th birthday in September I am strapping myself into a harness and abseiling down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth. The tower is 100m and Hyperia (the tallest rollercoaster in the UK is only 71m!).

I've never abseiled before and have decided to do this to support AGE UK Isle of Wight - because the national one doesn't support people on the Isle of Wight (and that includes the charity shops over here!).

I'm not scared at the moment, but would really like to hit my fundraising target if anyone is able to support me.

Charlotte White is fundraising for Age UK Isle of Wight

Our very own Gordy from Gordy's Wood Co in Arreton has kindly agreed to become a "Dope on a Rope" on Sunday 13th September, when he joins other brave participants and abseils down the Spinnaker Tower all for a good cause - us!!

If you know of Gordy, then you will know he is a chap with one of the biggest hearts going, and through his work he supports many local charities.

This year, as one of his crazy challenges he has signed himself (and his daughter) up to abseil down the Spinnaker Tower to support Age UK IW raise funds to support older people on the Island as they navigate their way through the opportunities and challenges of getting older. As you may be aware, we have a much higher percentage of older people on the Isle of Wight, than the national average, so demand for our charity is very high, especially for our 100 volunteer befrienders, who help tackle isolation and loneliness by making visits across the Island (We are always looking for more volunteers - if you are interested and would like more information please email volunteering@ageukiw.org.uk).

If you know Gordy well you may also be aware that he is so busy all the time, and not a huge fan of creating online pages like this and asking people for money! So we asked if we could set one up on his behalf, because we think he's great and want to support him - and we're pretty sure lots of you think he's amazing too and would be happy to donate if you are in a position too, to one of his latest crazy fundraising ideas!

"Yes - I must have lost all sense of rational thought. Just 3 weeks before my 50th birthday, I am going to abseil off the 100 metre high Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth! All to raise much needed funds for Age UK - Isle of Wight.

Age UK IW offer lots of services to support our older islanders - including but not limited to support in their homes and gardens, after discharge from hospital, mental health support, signposting for help and daily respite support for families who are carers.

We are - hopefully - all going to get old. And when we do, we will be incredibly grateful for the work of charities such as Age UK IW. Please support me if you can - I'm pretty terrified and will need to know that you all have my back!"
