Celebrating Befriending Week

From 1–7 November, we’re celebrating the friendships and connections formed through Age UK Isle of Wight’s Good Neighbour Scheme, and the people who make them possible.

A regular chat can give someone the chance to share their news, talk about a favourite interest or simply enjoy another person’s company. For an older Islander who is feeling lonely or isolated, having someone take the time to listen can make a real difference to their week.

Throughout Befriending Week, we’re sharing quotes and experiences from our volunteers and the people they befriend, hearing what these connections mean to them. We’ll be adding more contributions to this page throughout the week, so please come back to hear from others involved in the scheme.

Befriending: in their own words

Meet Allan, befriending and digital volunteer

Allan gives his time to chat with people on our befriending list each week. Alongside this, he also helps people with digital questions and problems, offering support with their phones and computers.

Here’s what he enjoys about his befriending role:

“My name is Allan. I’m one of the Age UK Isle of Wight volunteers. Part of my role is talking to clients who are on the befriending list once a week.

This is to keep in touch with them and to ensure that they are having regular contact with someone.

I really enjoy this part of the role, as I get to chat to some amazing people and listen to their stories about their lives. It’s rewarding for me also, as it gives me a purpose.”

Thank you, Allan, for sharing your experience and for the time and care you give to supporting older Islanders.

Could you spare an hour a week?

Through our Good Neighbour Scheme, befriending volunteers offer regular company by phone or in person. Catching up, sharing stories and getting to know someone can help them feel more connected, while bringing something rewarding to your own week too.

Volunteering can fit around your life. Calls or visits can take place in the evenings or at weekends, at a time that suits both you and the person you befriend.

It’s easy to take the first step. Our team is always on hand to answer questions, offer guidance and support you along the way, from your first enquiry to getting to know your befriendee.
