Story 4 : A Listening Ear and a Warm Smile

Most of us will feel lonely at some point in our lives. For a lot of us, particularly those in later life, loneliness can define our lives and have a significant impact on our wellbeing. But we can help you feel less alone. There are many reasons why someone might be feeling lonely or there might be no clear reason for why they’re feeling the way they are.

Our Befriending service is a real lifeline, we support lonely and isolated older people, living in the City and County, with a volunteer visitor or telephone befriender to chat with regularly. Our friendly trained volunteers provide regular companionship, provide an opportunity to share life’s experiences and a listening ear.  Whether it’s over a cup of tea, a game of cards or putting the world to rights, everyone feels the benefit of talking.

“I feel very happy with the befriending service, She is a lovely person to talk to and we have a real laugh together. She went to great trouble to give me some flowers on my 90th birthday which was so thoughtful and made me feel very special! I feel less lonely now”.
