A brand-new walking rugby group is set to launch in Bridgnorth, offering men aged 60 and over the chance to stay active and socially connected while enjoying a slower-paced version of the game they love.

The initiative has been spearheaded by Liz Rochelle and Iain Seivewright at Bridgnorth Rugby Club, with valuable support from local charity, Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin and funding from The National Lottery Community Fund.

To mark the launch, a special introductory event will take place on Monday 13 April from 10am-12pm at Bridgnorth Rugby Club. The morning will begin with a warm reception in the clubhouse, followed by a live demonstration of walking rugby to introduce the rules and format of the game. The event will conclude with refreshments and an opportunity to meet fellow participants in a relaxed and friendly setting.

Walking rugby is a low-impact, non-contact adaptation of the traditional game, making it ideal for beginners and those returning to the sport after time away. Players must walk at all times, with simple rules such as backward or lateral passing and turnovers when the ball hits the ground. The game is typically played on a smaller pitch and uses two-handed touch tackles, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

Liz Rochelle said: “Walking rugby is a fantastic way to stay active and enjoy the game at a slower pace, making it suitable for all fitness levels and ages. The sessions are perfect for former players who miss the camaraderie, anyone recovering from injury or those that are simply looking for a fun way to keep moving.”

The new group aims to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where participants can improve their fitness, rekindle their love of rugby, and build new friendships. Transport will be provided for those that wish to get involved but don’t own a vehicle or are unable to get to the rugby club on their own.

Jim Hawkins, Service Development Officer at Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, added: “We are really happy to help establish this group which is a great fit with the wide range of activities we offer older people. Social activities like this can make a real difference to the mental and physical wellbeing of older men.”

Anyone interested in joining is warmly invited to attend the launch event.
