Time is running out for older people to claim a free Home Energy Check from Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin.
We’re urging older people to take advantage of our free service which will help to make their homes warmer and could save them money on heating bills; but they need to hurry as the offer ends in May.
Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin is offering free Home Energy Checks and the installation of free energy efficient equipment to older people who find it difficult to pay their heating bills or keep their homes warm in winter.
Hilary Knight, Deputy Chief Executive for the charity, said: ‘The Home Energy Check takes around an hour. It is completely free and there is no attempt to try to sell anything. An energy advisor will make a home visit at your convenience and offer impartial advice about how to reduce your energy bills and on making your home as energy efficient as possible.
‘At the same time, we can install a range of energy efficiency equipment such as lightbulbs, draught-proofing, pipe lagging and radiator panels completely free of charge.’
Being cold can be particularly dangerous for older people and Shropshire has one of the highest death rates in the country in colder weather: every year 285 people die from cold related causes in the county. The importance of keeping warm in older age is very important. Research shows that a third of older people live in one room to reduce their heating bill. Most deaths are caused by illnesses such as heart attacks, strokes and breathing problems, keeping warm can help to keep these illnesses at bay.
