Poppies and pom poms – A Surrey Day and VE Day Anniversary Celebration.

Come and knit with us to celebrate on Saturday 10th May - 11am to 3pm.

Everyone is welcome, whatever your age or level of knitting or crochet skill, to join us for Age UK Surrey’s KNIT-A-THON at the Clockhouse Community Centre in Milford.

We aim to bring together younger and older generations, making little hats with poppies and pom poms in celebration of Surrey Day and the 80th Anniversary of VE Day, while raising funds for Age UK Surrey. Refreshments will be available.

As part of their Big Knit Campaign, which was launched in 2003, Age UK and Innocent have teamed up to bring together the country’s crafters to knit or crochet little hats for the tops of Innocent smoothie bottles. For every little hat made, Age UK Surrey receives 30p, which goes towards supporting the older people in our community by providing much-needed services and activities. The 2024-2025 Campaign aims to knit 1.4 million hats nationally, with hats appearing on the supermarket shelves in October 2025.

This year, students from Prior’s Field School and Godalming College, local care home residents, scouts and knitting groups from all over Surrey plan to come together to remember and create. They will be knitting or crocheting little hats adorned with poppies and pom poms to raise awareness of issues like loneliness in our elderly communities, and to remember and give thanks to those who have given their lives in the war.
