Eleven fundraisers go the distance for Age UK Surrey at the Surrey Half Marathon
Eleven participants have crossed the finish line at the Surrey Half Marathon on Sunday, 22 March 2026, raising £2,846 for Age UK Surrey. The event was full of runners and supporters of all ages, from groups of school children getting ready for the Junior Race, to first-timers taking on a new challenge of the 5k or Half Marathon, to seasoned runners adding another medal to their trophy shelf - the event village was full of excitement, anticipation, and success. From a frosty start to bright blue skies, the Age UK Surrey team showed up with determination to raise awareness and vital funds.
The Age UK Surrey team included four participants from the University of Surrey's SHARP initiative (Surrey Healthy Ageing Research Partnership), a public engagement group dedicated to ageing well. SHARP brings together older adults, community groups, charities, health authorities and researchers to ensure that academic work translates into real-world improvements for older people.
Natalie Riddell, a Senior Lecturer in Immunology and Ageing who signed up on behalf of SHARP, said the partnership was proud to run for a charity so closely aligned with its own mission. "We want to make sure our research is improving the well-being of older adults," she said — and supporting Age UK Surrey's vital frontline services is a natural extension of that goal.

Among the group was Will, an Age UK Surrey employee marking a milestone year in the most active way possible — completing his very first half-marathon before his 60th birthday.
"I joined Age UK Surrey 10 years ago and during my time at the charity I have met so many amazing and inspiring clients," said Will. "I have listened to many of their stories about the importance of staying active. This has encouraged me to keep active and enjoy life as much as possible."
Having previously run 5km regularly, Will took on the 13.1-mile challenge as both a personal achievement and a tribute to the clients who have inspired him throughout his decade with the charity.
Every pound raised helps fund the services that keep older adults in Surrey independent, connected, and thriving. From combating loneliness to supporting people with dementia to providing essential home support, our fundraisers’ efforts create real impact.
The fundraiser arrives at a meaningful moment for Age UK Surrey, which has just launched its Age Better Together in Surrey campaign - promoting the lifelong benefits of staying active to maintain strength, balance, cognition and mental wellbeing. Will, Natalie and their fellow runners embody that message perfectly.
Donations are still welcome
