New June Dates. Join our free Slipper Social events in York

Published on 24 April 2025 11:00 AM

York's new Slipper Social Events prove a great success in our collective efforts to reduce falls and tackle frailty in York

New dates announced for more local events here across York. We are delighted to confirm the next three dates for our Slipper Socials alongside our friends including City of York Council.

These are:

Friday 6th June 9.30 am - 10.30am Tang Hall Community Centre

Wednesday 18th June 10am - 12noon St Oswalds church in Fulford

Tuesday 24th June 12 - 2pm  St Wulstans Church Dodsworth Avenue

The first two Slipper Social events have been a fantastic success. Over 120 pairs of free slippers have been given to local older residents in York as part of our efforts in helping reduce the risk of trips and falls at home.

A huge thank you to everyone who has attended including the relatives who have often joined too in finding out more information and how we can offer support to a loved one. As ever our work is only possible thanks to our team and colleagues from across our partners including City of York Council. They were certainly busy giving our slippers and advice!

Original story: Your invitation to join one of the new slipper social events here in York alongside City of York Council and other local partners.

Age UK York is working together with City of York Council and fellow local partners to run new local 'Slipper Social' events here in York in our efforts to help address the risk of trips and fall.

Incredibly the simple step of a well fitting pair of slippers can reduce the risk of older people falling by 60%. Together we are delighted to be able to make this a reality and offer free replacement slippers at a series of events as well as sharing some information and advice all whilst enjoying a drink and a chat.

The first session took place at Marjorie Waite Courte in the Clifton area of our City in late April and has been a fantastic start. 42 pairs of slippers were given to people attending whilst sharing valuable information too. Thank you to everyone who joined us and their kind and positive thoughts of our new event.

Our next date for your diary is:

  • Wednesday 7 May, 1.30 - 3.30pm at Acomb Methodist Church

Age UK York's Bev (Ward) explained the reasons behind this and the efforts of our local charity and City of York Council in working to help address the risk and impact of trips and falls.

Please do spread the word and join us if you are able. The first dates are set with more to follow. A huge thank you to all involved in making these possible and the help we look to offer in supporting a life of independence and quality as we age.
