Older People's Day 2022

We are pleased to announce that we will be attending Older People's Day at Broad Street Mall again on Friday 30th September 2022.

Reading will be celebrating National Older People's Day on Friday September 30 with a free fun packed event at Broad Street Mall, 10am until 3pm, highlighting the contribution older people make to the Reading community.

Older People’s Day coincides with the UN International Day of Older Persons. The main aim for the day is to be a celebration of the achievements and contributions that older people make to our society and the economy. Older People’s Day supports the campaign to challenge negative attitudes and outdated stereotypes, the theme for 2022 is

‘Enhancing Lives for Older People’

Reading is a vibrant town with a rich array of local services that support residents, come along and find out how they can help you; Tuvida Carers Hub, Citizens Advice Reading, MacMillan Cancer Education, Compass Recovery College, Age UK Berkshire, Age UK Reading to name but a few. Royal Berkshire Hospital will also be offering free blood pressure checks and hearing tests on the day. 

The programme will include:

10am Event starts with opening remarks by The Mayor of Reading

10:30am Seated Yoga

12:15pm Hand bells

1:00pm Physiotherapy exercise session

1:30pm Firtree 50 year anniversary

2:15pm Seated Exercise

Additional activities on the day include:

  • Dementia Friends sessions run by Age UK Berkshire 11am-2pm - please click here to view/download the flyer for more information
  • Dementia Bus - sponsored by the Royal Berks Charity and Royal Berkshire Hospital.  The Dementia Bus Tour is a scientifically and medically proven training for letting a person with a healthy brain experience what dementia might be like. It allows someone to enter the world of the individual with dementia by understanding which simple changes need to be made to their daily practice and environment to improve the lives of people with dementia.
  • Cyber security sessions run by Reading Voluntary Action
  • Free guided tour of the Reading Abbey Ruins - At 11am join a relaxed hour-long guided history walk around Reading Abbey Ruins, weather permitting. Places on the walk can be booked by emailing Reading Museum museum.education@reading.gov.uk
  • Free hearing tests at Reading Walking-in Health Centre - 10am-12pm - offered by the Audiology Team at Royal Berkshire Hospital

We will be joined by around 30 organisations such as OddFellows Society, Age UK Reading, Berkshire Vision, Get Berkshire Active, Reading Museum, Thames Valley Pension Service and more. They will have information stalls offering advice on a wide range of services.
