Communities in Motion

Published on 07 April 2026 12:59 PM

Older people across the Bradford District are being invited to take their first steps towards a healthier, more active lifestyle as Age UK Bradford District prepares to launch an exciting new programme called Communities in Motion.

Made possible through funding from the London Marathon Foundation, Communities in Motion will introduce a wide range of welcoming, accessible physical activities for people aged 65 and over across communities throughout the district over the next two years.

The programme has been designed to help older people become more active, improve strength and balance, boost confidence, make new friends and enjoy the many physical and mental wellbeing benefits that regular movement can bring.

Over the coming months, Age UK Bradford District will begin rolling out activities including:

  • More Walking Groups across the District
  • Pilates groups
  • Dance Sessions
  • “Nowt  to 5k”
  • Community Mass Walks
  • Pilates in the Park
  • Daytime Discos

Activities will be introduced gradually across different locations, with further announcements being made as venues and timetables are confirmed.

Mark Rounding, Chief Executive of Age UK Bradford District, said:

"We know that becoming more active doesn't have to mean joining a gym or running marathons. Communities in Motion is about creating friendly, welcoming opportunities where older people can move more, meet others and enjoy themselves in a supportive environment.

Whether someone is taking their very first steps towards becoming more active or simply looking for a new group to join, we want there to be something for everyone. This is one of the biggest physical activity programmes we've delivered, and we're incredibly excited to see it grow across the district over the coming months."

Although bookings for activities will open later this year, local people don't need to wait.

Age UK Bradford District is encouraging anyone interested in taking part to register their interest now. Those who do will be among the first to hear when activities launch in their area and receive information about upcoming events and opportunities.

There is no obligation to take part by registering - it's simply the easiest way to stay informed.

Residents can register their interest by visiting:

Age UK Bradford District also welcomes enquiries from volunteers who would like to support the project, as well as community organisations, GP practices, social prescribers and local partners who would like to help promote the programme or refer older people who may benefit.

Further announcements, launch dates and community events will be revealed throughout the coming months as Communities in Motion begins rolling out across Bradford District.
