Brenda gets a letter from HM the Queen!

Published on 05 March 2020 12:26 PM

Brenda lives in South Bristol and regularly comes to the Friends Ageing Better Catch Up Cafe at the Withywood Centre. We meet every Tuesday morning for a cuppa and a chat, we bring magazines, books and photographs of life in Bristol.

On this occasion, Brenda brought a letter she received from Buckingham Palace! One day, while talking with her daughter, Brenda wondered if the Queen ever had those days where you just look out the window, see rain and clouds on the horizon and just turn around for a snooze. Well, she might have phrased it differently than that, but you get the picture.

Brenda’s daughter shared this thought in writing with Her Majesty, including information about Brenda’s remarkable life. She has a foster parent for many children throughout her life, as well as caring for other family members. Brenda has lived a full life and always has stories to share at the café, like the time she was evacuated during the Bristol blitz or her experience having her own children.

Brenda could not believe her eyes when she opened this letter. Not only did it have a reply written by a lady in waiting on behalf of the Queen, but also an official photo of Queen Elizabeth II. She was pleased to hear such kind words addressed to her and to see the Queen’s interest in people’s correspondence to her.

You can see Brenda telling this story in her own words and reading the letter in this video below. We warn you, she has a wicked sense of humour!

Our Tuesday mornings at the Withywood Centre are always full of stories and laughter, this friendly group has been meeting regularly for over a year now and we are always looking for more people to join us! We meet at 10.30am (until 12pm) at the Withywood Centre Café every Tuesday. We organise informal talks about topics of interest and we even have trips every now and then. This is a free activity and everybody is welcome.
