Twiddle Muffs donated to Age UK Bristol’s service users

Sarah and her mum, Margaret, recently visited the Age UK Bristol office to drop off some twiddle muffs they have been knitting over winter.

Sarah and Margaret are taking part in the ‘Discovery Award’ a national programme aimed at people over 50 to help promote an active and healthy lifestyle by trying out new things and challenges. “We like to keep ourselves busy, and fancied a new challenge,” said Sarah. One challenge they have undertaken is to learn to knit and after they attended a beginner’s workshop last year they decided to knit twiddle muffs to gift to people living with dementia.

Twiddle muffs are simple knitted sensory therapy tools designed to occupy people living with advanced dementia who can often have restless, cold hands. The muffs are brightly coloured and decorated with small ribbons, zips and buttons for the person using them to fiddle with and keep warm at the same time.

Sarah has seen the benefits twiddle muffs can have as both of her grandparents were given some when they were in the hospital and in care homes. “We wanted to give something back,” said Sarah.

Sarah and her mum have knitted four so far and plan to continue. Thank you for your donation! We’ll be sharing these with members of our New Beginnings Day Centre in Withywood.
