Halloween can be a fun time for many people, and it can bring a lot of joy watching young children trick or treating. But for some people Halloween night can cause worry especially if they are home alone or concerned about late night callers.

No-one should have to feel scared or anxious in their own home. Many will not say how worrying Halloween is for them as they do not want to ‘spoil the fun.’

Here are some simple tips to help ensure Halloween is fun for everyone:

  1. Keep your house lit and pathways clear. If you do not want any trick or treaters try keeping outdoor lights off or put a sign on the door.
  2. If you are unsure about who is knocking, it is perfectly okay to not answer the door. You could ask a friend or family member to check in on you on Halloween evening.
  3. Keep your phone nearby to help you feel connected and safe in case you need anything. You could let a friend or family member know what you plans are on the evening.
  4. If you would like to avoid trick or treaters you don’t have to put out Halloween decorations.

If you are out trick or treating:

  1. Remember not everyone, especially older members of your community, wants to be disturbed on Halloween. A good rule of thumb is only knock on doors that have a pumpkin or Halloween decorations out. This usually means the household are happy to receive trick or treaters.
  2. Be mindful or loud noises or strobe lights around other people. These can be distressing for some older people, especially those with dementia.
  3. If someone does not answer their door it is best to move on. No-one has to open their door to you.
  4. If you know a loved one will be on their own that evening, why not check in on them via a call or visit. Just make sure you let them know it is you to avoid any distress.

We wish everyone a happy and safe Halloween!
