Communities in Motion

Published on 16 September 2026 06:30 AM

For those who can, being physically active as we age can make a huge difference to our quality of life and health outcomes, and it comes in many different ways, shapes and forms to suit everyone’s needs and abilities – from chair-based movements requiring minimum exertion but with maximum positive impact, to finding a new sport or rediscovering one you used to love.

Yet recent research reveals that one in three (33%) older people are physically inactive, meaning they spend less than 30 minutes a week doing physical activity, and one in five have difficulty carrying out at least one everyday activity.

The Communities in Motion programme aims to remove some of the barriers that many older people face when looking to increase their physical activity levels and is open to everyone aged 65+ regardless of skill or ability level.

Age UK Enfield has also been awarded funding to offer bespoke one-to-one mentoring services to a select number of older people in the area who are currently most at risk from lack of physical activity.

About Communities in Motion

The London Marathon Foundation (the Foundation) has awarded more than £1.9 million to Age UK to fund its Communities in Motion programme.

The Communities in Motion programme will be delivered by 10 local Age UKs across the country over a two-year period, acting as a catalyst for engaging older communities in physical activity. The locations include: Age UK Bradford District, Age UK County Durham, Age UK Enfield, Age UK Hull & East Yorkshire, Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland, Age UK Lincolnshire, Age UK Norfolk, Age UK Salford & Trafford, Age UK Teesside and Age UK Wolverhampton.
