The Mabel Churn Centre
Inside The ...
A Place to Feel Safe, Seen and Stimulated

"When mum sees the carers she lights up and really starts laughing the most important thing to me is that my mum is happy and that's what the staff at the day centre do."
Tucked into the heart of the local community, The Mabel Churn Centre is quietly transforming what dementia support can look and feel like. More than a building or a service, it has become a place of reassurance, connection and purpose for people living with dementia and for those who care about them.
As a specialised dementia centre, The Mabel Churn Centre is designed with one clear aim: to create an environment where people feel safe, welcomed and able to thrive. From the moment visitors step through the doors, there is a sense of calm and familiarity. Thoughtful design, clear signage, comfortable spaces and a warm, friendly atmosphere all play a role in helping people feel at ease.
But it is what happens within those walls that truly sets the centre apart.
“We have worked hard to create an inviting and safe environment,” says Venetta Hunt, Head of Care Services, “and to develop a stimulating programme of activities that supports wellbeing, confidence and connection.”
That commitment is visible in every aspect of daily life at the centre. Activities are carefully planned to support cognitive function, physical movement and emotional wellbeing, while also offering moments of joy, creativity and shared laughter. Music, art, gentle exercise, reminiscence, and social activities are all tailored to the needs and abilities of those attending, ensuring everyone can take part in a meaningful way.
Importantly, the programme is not about filling time — it is about enriching lives.
Staff understand that living with dementia does not remove a person’s need for purpose, choice and dignity. Activities are designed to spark memories, encourage conversation and foster a sense of belonging. For many attendees, the centre offers not just stimulation, but friendship and routine — something that can be deeply reassuring in a world that may otherwise feel confusing or overwhelming.
Families and carers also benefit enormously. Knowing that a loved one is spending time in a safe, supportive and engaging environment brings peace of mind, while also offering carers vital respite and support. The centre becomes a trusted partner, walking alongside families as they navigate the challenges of dementia.
What truly makes The Mabel Churn Centre special is its person‑centred approach. Staff take the time to get to know each individual — their history, interests and preferences — and adapt support accordingly. This personalised care helps people feel recognised not by their diagnosis, but by who they are.
Venetta Hunt reflects, “Creating a space where people feel valued and comfortable has been central to everything we do. When people feel safe, they are more likely to engage, connect and enjoy themselves — and that makes a real difference to their wellbeing.”
In a community where the need for high‑quality dementia support continues to grow, The Mabel Churn Centre stands as a powerful example of what is possible when care is delivered with compassion, creativity and respect.
It is a place where people are not defined by dementia, but supported to live well with it — surrounded by understanding, stimulation and human connection.

The Mabel Churn Centre is officially open! 9th December 2025
On Tuesday 9th December we officially launched our new Mabel Churn Centre.

This was a significant milestone for Age UK Enfield after leaving our Parker Centre in Edmonton to move into into a beautifully light and bright purposed built centre that we have transformed to a dementia centre of excellence.
We were delighted to welcome colleagues from across Adults Social Care, NHS and voluntary sector, local ward Councillors, our Deputy Mayor of Enfield, and all those involved in the process of acquiring, refurbishing and developing the new centre, our staff, trustees and volunteers.
Keynote speeches were delivered by our Chair Elaine Adkin, CEO Helen Oliver, Matt Casey, Head of Strategy and Service Development, Adults Social Care.
We were especially delighted to welcome Marion (niece of Mabel) and Peter Kelly from The Mabs Mardulyn Foundation who have made this exciting new chapter for AUKE possible - as well as one of Mabel's friends, Pauline.
Alison Naomi Porter, local author and supporter gave a short speech and shared here poem written especially for the occasion - A Time Will Come.
We had a room full of innovators from Gait Smart, Sense Medical, KiActiv, Healum, and Recreo VR. Diabetes team were available to test and provide information.

We've Moved In
Following nearly a year of logistical planning and refurbishment, we are delighted to report that The Mabel Churn Centre opened yesterday (27th October). This means that all our clients who were with us at The Parker Centre have now come and joined us at our newly decorated facility. The Home Care services team has also moved here alongside the Charity's main operational team. The Prevention Services section will join us later next year.
This move enables us to take on more clients and reach out to more older people in the Borough with all the health and well-being activities, advice, and information we offer.
If you are interested in day or home care services, please contact our Head of Care Services, Venetta Hunt at venetta.hunt@ageukenfield.org.uk or by calling 020 8351 1131 if you have any queries.
As mentioned above, this move has been in the making for some time - you can read the formal announcement by clicking on this link.
The refurbishment work that has been undertaken upgrades the facility to reflect the modern-day needs and legal requirements of a dementia centre. It takes into account feedback received from our clients as well as insights from our qualified and dedicated day-care team who care for them.

It is a spacious building with a lot of natural light and even includes a courtyard and dedicated outdoor space. Its design reflects the needs of those who are restricted in movement or are wheelchair bound - for example there is a slope to the main entrance. Accessibility is a key aspect of the refurbishment plans and we will look to make the building dementia friendly through the use of colour.
As you'll see from the images, much has been done but there is more to do! Monies raised will be used in all aspects of the building's infrastructure and design - from lighting to security, from chairs and tables to crockery and kitchen equipment, from activity packs and exercise equipment to plants and gardening tools, from shelving and cabinets to IT and utility work, from chairs and tables to pictures and paint, the list is endless - and your support will help make it all possible. Donations can be made via this link and gifts of £500 or more will be accredited to the giver on our donor wall which will be sited in the main reception area.

The move marks a significant step forward in our mission to support and enrich the lives of older residents across the Borough.
