Pension Credit: could you be entitled to extra support?
Published on 08 October 2026 10:12 AM
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is encouraging people of State Pension age to check whether they could be entitled to Pension Credit.
Pension Credit can provide extra financial support for people on a low income in later life. However, many people who could be entitled do not claim it.
According to the DWP, up to 910,000 pensioner households may be entitled to Pension Credit but are not currently receiving it.
There are also some common misconceptions about who can receive Pension Credit. For example, having savings, owning your own home or receiving a pension does not necessarily mean that you cannot qualify.
Pension Credit is a tax-free payment that can provide additional support with weekly income. Depending on individual circumstances, receiving Pension Credit can also open the door to other forms of support, including help with housing costs, Council Tax and heating costs.
Check whether you could be entitled
If you're of State Pension age, you can use the government's Pension Credit calculator to get an indication of whether you might be entitled. You don't need to provide personal details to use the calculator.
